Auckland City Hospital is a 750 bed acute general hospital which provides:

  • secondary services to central Auckland
  • the most tertiary services to the Auckland and Northland regions
  • a number of national Quaternary services.

We are the major teaching hospital of the University of Auckland faculty of medical and health sciences.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) is one of two adult intensive care units at Auckland City Hospital, and admits approximately 1800 patients per year. The DCCM has 26 funded beds providing a variable combination of intensive care and high dependency beds.

Our caseload comprises of:

  • general intensive care
  • neuro intensive care
  • trauma
  • tertiary surgical services
  • abdominal organ transplantation.

Te whiwhinga mahi – The opportunity and important skills

We have an opportunity for an Intensivist to join DCCM for a 12-month fixed-term position starting February 2026.

This role will require you to:

  • have FCICM and vocational registration in New Zealand (or an equivalent ICU specialist qualification that is recognised for vocational registration in New Zealand)
  • provide tertiary level intensive care knowledge and skills to patients within intensive care and to patients on the wards as required
  • participate in a rotating senior medical staff roster
  • participate in junior medical staff and nursing staff supervision and teaching
  • participate in intensive care unit activities related to research, quality, data, audit
  • develop and provide leadership in one area of intensive care that will enhance our ability to provide the best outcome for our patients.
