About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our team. You’ll be at the heart of our multidisciplinary team, providing evidence based care to our inpatients.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • comprehensive assessments – performing psychiatric and risk assessments
  • medical leadership – overseeing the medical care of patients, including prescribing and monitoring medications, and managing co-existing physical health conditions
  • collaborative care – working closely with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to patient care
  • mentorship – providing guidance and support to medical students, junior medical staff and the wider team
  • discharge planning – collaborating with the multidisciplinary team and community services to ensure a smooth transition for patients leaving the unit.

About the Team/Service/Location

Te Whare O Matairangi is a supportive, friendly and diverse environment.

It is a 24 hour, 30 bed acute inpatient Mental Health assessment, treatment and recovery unit at Wellington Regional Hospital.

You will be part of an experienced team that includes:

  • ​nurses – our dedicated nursing staff provide round-the-clock care, support, and monitoring
  • psychologists – offering individual therapy, psychological assessments, and specialised interventions
  • occupational therapists – helping patients regain daily living skills and to engage in meaningful activities
  • ​social workers – providing support with housing, finances, and family connections, ensuring a safe discharge
  • ​support staff – our wider team of peer support workers, mental health support workers help guide and support recovery
  • administrative staff – our admin team are essential to the smooth running of the unit.

​We hold multidisciplinary team meetings daily to discuss cases and work together to achieve the best outcomes for our patients. Our team is committed to continuous professional development.

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans across Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the three sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa.

About you:

  • Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Relevant experience and training
