About the role

We are looking for Consultant Anaesthetists and a fixed-term Consultant Paediatrics Anaesthetist to join our team.

Wellington Regional Hospital is one of the newest hospitals in New Zealand and one of five tertiary-level teaching hospitals in the country. It is a state-of-the-art facility with innovative models of care.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Capital, Coast, is seeking applications from Specialist Anaesthetists for fixed-term vacancies we currently have available.

Clinical work will encompass:

  • anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical specialties
  • preoperative assessment of patients
  • involvement in acute postoperative pain management
  • participation in an on-call roster.

A challenging, tertiary-level case mix is offered but can be tailored to the individual’s past experience and areas of interest.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Capital, Coast hospitals include Wellington Regional Hospital (servicing a tertiary population of 900,000) and Kenepuru Hospital (a secondary-level community hospital). There are a total of 19 operating theatres.

About the Team/Service/Location

The department provides anaesthesia for all surgical specialties with the exception of plastic surgery, paediatric cardiac surgery, and heart and lung transplant surgery.

The department has an active education programme that includes Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists fellowship training for 20 trainees, continuing education for specialists, and participation in an on-site, high-fidelity simulation training suite (The Wellington Regional Centre for Simulation and Skills Education). The research and education centre provides opportunities to pursue research interests. Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital, and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre in Paraparaumu.

About you

You will:

  • be vocationally registered in Anaesthesia with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • hold a FANZCA or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • be able to work in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
  • be able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
  • have relevant experience and training.
