Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora Waitematā provides healthcare services to a population of around 640,000 people living in the North Shore, Waitakere and Rodney areas of Auckland New Zealand. We have the largest population of all Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora districts, and we are growing our services to match. We have two hospitals, North Shore Hospital and Waitakere Hospital, with four theatres suites. Our brand new elective surgical facility, Tōtara Haumaru, with eight operating rooms on the NSH site opened in July 2024 and we require additional anaesthetists to accommodate this growth.
About the Service/Location
There are a wide range of clinical subspecialties excluding cardiothoracic, neurosurgery and transplant surgery.
We have:
- a Perioperative Medicine Service which includes CPET testing, and we are a training site for the ANZCA course in perioperative medicine
- acute, chronic and transitional pain services and would welcome applicants with a fellowship or interest in pain medicine
- busy obstetric units at both hospitals, managing 7500 births per annum combined.
Waitematā is the only public hospital in New Zealand offering robotic surgery.
The department has senior house officers, registrars, and fellows at all stages of the ANZCA training programme, and we are looking for candidates with a commitment to teaching. SMOs are generally onsite in the evenings and weekends to support the trainees with the significant acute workload. This is covered by a call roster – joining the call roster is by discussion with the Clinical Director, usually after an orientation period has been completed.
Successful candidates will have a broad scope of clinical skills, commitment to continuing medical education, and a focus on quality improvement. FANZCA or equivalent qualification is required and registration with the New Zealand Medical Council is essential.
Auckland is a vibrant multicultural city with beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants, and easy access to the great outdoors. There are great options for schooling and entertainment for children of all ages. Our hospitals have ample parking on site and are accessible by public transport.
