Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the role

We are excited to invite applications to join our team of Hutt Anaesthetists.

We are a friendly, collaborative, dynamic, and future-focused team of approximately 30 consultants who work in a New Zealand medium-sized hospital. We are somewhat unique in the country by providing some tertiary services (plastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, and dental services) in an otherwise secondary hospital. We also have a close and developing relationship with Wellington Regional Hospital’s Anaesthesia department.

Hutt Hospital has eight modern operating theatres with a number of other remote locations within the hospital. Our department has special interests in complex shared airway care, regional anaesthesia, obstetrics, and paediatric anaesthesia.

We offer two, three, or four-day-a-week contracts. We have a team of eight anaesthesia RMO trainees who also cover onsite after-hours work. In addition, we have two provisional trainees with training areas of regional anaesthesia, head and neck, or paediatrics. They contribute to the SMO on-call roster.

Anaesthesia on-call from home commitments are currently shared between 20 consultants. These are paid in addition to base salary.

ICU care, including on-call, is now provided by a separate dedicated team of ICU consultants. Working in ICU is no longer part of the Hutt Anaesthetists role. However, we would be happy to welcome applicants who wish to work in both anaesthesia and intensive care.

About the Team/Service/Location

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington Region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital, and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre in Paraparaumu.

About you

You will:

  • be vocationally registered in Anaesthesia with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • hold FANZCA or an equivalent qualification to enable vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • be able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
  • have relevant experience and training
  • have skills or experience in paediatric, obstetric, and regional anaesthesia (desirable).
