About the role
As a Consultant Neurologist, you will provide specialist neurological assessment and management within a regional secondary care service. The role is primarily outpatient-focused, with neurologists conducting regular outpatient clinics and contributing to inpatient consultative care when required.
Inpatient neurology patients are admitted under General Medicine and remain under General Medicine for the duration of their admission. Neurologists provide specialist advice, with management implemented by the admitting general physicians. As such, Neurologist may be required to review inpatients and offer consultative recommendations rather than assume primary responsibility for care.
The position offers a varied and rewarding caseload across a broad range of neurological conditions, with opportunities to contribute to service development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and clinical education.
About the Team/Service/Location
The Nelson Marlborough Neurology Service is a secondary care service providing specialist neurological assessment and management predominantly in the outpatient setting.
The service operates across two hospital sites:
- Nelson Hospital, serving a population of approximately 100,000
- Wairau Hospital, serving a population of approximately 50,000
Patients requiring tertiary-level neurological care are transferred to tertiary centres as appropriate. Our general medicine colleagues are highly experienced and manage a wide range of complex neurological presentations locally, enabling neurologists to focus on specialist assessment, diagnostic expertise, and treatment planning.
You will join a collaborative and supportive multidisciplinary environment working closely with:
- general physicians
- specialist nurses
- allied health professionals
- diagnostic services including radiology and neurophysiology.
The Neurology Service works closely with General Medicine teams across both hospital sites to ensure integrated and high-quality care for patients with neurological conditions across the region.
