About the role
Nelson Hospital is seeking a dedicated and experienced Gastroenterologist to join our dynamic team. This role offers the opportunity to provide high-quality and patient-centred care across a range of gastroenterology conditions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- managing both inpatient and outpatient services
- supporting general medical colleagues
- conducting gastroenterology clinics
- performing diagnostic and endoscopic procedures.
A strong interest in service development and continued improvement is highly valued.
You’ll be part of a collegial and supportive team of experienced physicians with diverse subspecialty interests. Our team works closely with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and primary care providers to ensure an integrated approach to patient care.
About the Team/Service/Location
Our Department of Medicine comprises 16 specialist physicians with a diverse range of sub-specialties, including:
- cardiology
- endocrinology
- gastroenterology
- haematology
- nephrology
- oncology
- respiratory.
The team prides itself on collaboration, mentorship, and providing expert care across Nelson Marlborough region. You will be joining a highly collegial environment where shared decision-making and professional development are encouraged.
The Gastroenterology service at Nelson Hospital offers a comprehensive spectrum of care, including outpatient and inpatient consultations, endoscopic procedures, and multidisciplinary care planning. The service is supported by dedicated nursing staff. Nelson Hospital provides care for a diverse population across the Nelson Marlborough region, with opportunities for involvement in both acute and elective gastroenterology services.

About you:
- Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent
- Specialist accreditation in gastroenterology (NZ Gastroenterology Society-recognised)
- Hold or be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Trained in General Internal Medicine (preferred)
- Ability to work independently in a provincial hospital setting
