Required qualifications: The ideal applicant will: have essential senior experience in providing intensive care for patients with acute, severe, and life-threatening conditions be an anaesthetist with intensive care expertise, however, all medical specialists with intensive care experience will also be considered be eligible for an Annual Practicing Certificate with vocational scope in anaesthesia or relevant vocational scope with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

About the role

Nelson Hospital is seeking three committed and experienced Intensive Care Anaesthetists to join our high-performing multidisciplinary team. This is a rewarding opportunity to provide specialist care across theatre and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within a secondary hospital serving the top of the South Island. The role includes management of critically unwell patients, provision of elective and acute anaesthesia services, and participation in the on-call roster. This position offers a stimulating mix of clinical acuity, procedural variety, and continuity of care within a supportive and collegial environment.

  • Join a team of two anaesthetists with intensive care skills and two intensivists
  • Participate in an intensive care daytime roster and an intensive care after-hours 1:7 on call
  • Respond swiftly and effectively to emergency situation and provide expert medical care to critical patients in the ICU
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans

Our ICU is working towards CICM level 2 ICU accreditation.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Service provides comprehensive perioperative and critical care to a diverse regional population. The ICU is a modern, well-equipped unit managing a broad case mix, including the diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute, severe, and life-threatening conditions as well as the provision of complex post-operative care.

The Anaesthesia Service supports other departments including:

  • obstetrics and gynaecology
  • paediatrics
  • general surgery
  • orthopaedics
  • urology
  • ENT
  • ophthalmology
  • dental
  • mental health
  • the emergency department.

The service also offers anaesthesia for visiting subspecialty surgeons in:

  • paediatric surgery
  • paediatric orthopaedic surgery
  • plastics
  • maxillofacial surgery.

The service is supported by a multidisciplinary team committed to delivering safe, patient-centred care and achieving high-quality outcomes for critically unwell patients.
