Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.
As Ōamaru Hospital has recently transitioned to be part of a Health New Zealand Hospital, we are now seeking a RHM Specialist or Rural Generalist who can provide clinical leadership as we shape the future of the service.
About us
Ōamaru Hospital is a rural hospital three hours south of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand and 90 minutes north of Dunedin. It is an exciting time for a medical leader and rural health medicine specialist to lead a transformation in health care with the Waitaki community. The Southern Regional Community Integration Commissioning and Hospital and Specialist Services teams have been working in partnership with the community on the Waitaki Health Futures Project to determine the needs of the community and the models of care moving forward. Ōamaru Hospital is a key element in the Waitaki health system and delivering this work.
About you
This Clinical Director role is 0.4 FTE with additional FTE up to 1.0 FTE providing clinical care within the service in both ED and the ward, and working as a GP in Ōamaru could also be an option.
The role is ideally suited to a Rural Health Medicine Specialist, although applicants with relevant experience in any rural health setting will be considered. Prior system transformation experience and clinical leadership experience is desirable but not essential. As Clinical Director, you will lead the Oamaru Hospital team in the provision of high quality, safe, patient-centred, integrated care linking in with the wider southern health system and rural hospital network. You will partner with the dynamic and committed Southern leadership team to continue the Waitaki Health Futures Work vision and recommendations to develop and implement integrated models of care to ensure high quality health outcomes for the Waitaki community.
You will need to have Vocational Registration either in RHM, EM, GP or Urgent Care with rural ED, ward and rural inpatient experience. You will be comfortable working flexibly with our small team of excellent nurses and allied health professionals and be keen to help us develop services as we grow.
Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora – Southern has close links with the University of Otago so there are opportunities to explore teaching and research and there are opportunities to link in with Southern clinical teams and the wider Southern Health system.
