About the role

Starship Child Health (Auckland), the leading provider of child health care in New Zealand and the South Pacific, has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Paediatric Anaesthetist (specialist/consultant). Fixed-term locum candidates are also encouraged to apply. The start date is flexible and negotiable.

This role is for a specialist Paediatric Anaesthetist who wishes to contribute clinically across the full spectrum of surgical disciplines in children, excluding paediatric cardiac surgery. The role also includes a busy out-of-theatre workload, such as radiology, interventional procedures, and radiotherapy, alongside day-case surgery delivered at a separate site.

This workload is supported by a pre-assessment service and a dedicated acute pain team. Time is allocated within the role for non-clinical activities, and team members are actively involved in teaching, education, quality improvement, and research at local, national, and international levels.

The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine manages approximately 11,000 cases annually across seven operating rooms at Starship Children’s Hospital, with additional sessions at the Greenlane Surgical Unit. A further 1,500 patients receive anaesthesia for procedures outside operating theatres, including MRI, CT, cardiac investigations, radiotherapy, and other radiology services.

The successful applicant will join a team of 25 consultants, 4 fellows, and 7 registrars at New Zealand’s leading provider of tertiary paediatric care. The team includes a dedicated acute and chronic pain service, with subspecialty expertise in cardiac and transplantation anaesthesia, and also provides secondary-level care for the local population.
