About the role

The Specialist Maternal Mental Health Service based in Wellington has a fixed-term vacancy for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our team working in perinatal mental health. This regional team works across Wellington region and offers support to pregnant and postnatal clients experiencing significant mental health challenge.

Become an integral part of our dedicated multidisciplinary team. In this pivotal role, you’ll help shape and deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to our patients.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • conducting comprehensive psychiatric and risk assessments
  • providing clinical leadership in medical care and physical health management
  • working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic care
  • supporting the development of junior staff and students through teaching and mentorship
  • coordinating effective discharge planning in partnership with community services.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Specialist Maternal Mental Health team provides services for clients who develop moderate to severe mental health issues during their pregnancy, and/or in the postnatal period up to 12 months after delivery at the point of referral.

The team works alongside other health care providers and offers consultation/liaison to health professionals involved in the care of this client group and also has a regional coordination role with the lower North Island Regional perinatal mental health network.

The team are passionate about this client group and their work, and offer a relational therapeutic model with great outcomes for clients and their pepi/whanau.

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans across Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3 sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa.

About you:

  • Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Relevant experience and training
