Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.
About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Radiologist with subspecialty training or experience in paediatric radiology to join the current Paediatric Radiology team and wider Radiology SMO team to deliver high quality Radiology services to the district and wider region.
Wellington Regional Hospital is one of New Zealand’s five tertiary medical centers in New Zealand and our radiology department is a recognised training institution for registrars, MITs, and sonographers. An emphasis is placed on teaching, including on-going personal and professional development.
Clinical responsibilities include:
- reporting and supervising imaging lists (e.g. CT, MRI, Ultrasound, plain film imaging)
- interventional and fluoroscopy procedures as appropriate
- leading and contributing to clinical meetings/MDMs and liaising with referring clinicians
- teaching and supervision of radiology trainees (RANZCR years one to five)
- participation in the diagnostic radiology on-call roster as appropriate.
About the Team/Service/Location
The Paediatric Radiology team is a small group who work closely together to support the paediatric medical, surgical and other paediatric subspecialty services (ENT, plastics, orthopaedics, obstetrics/fetomaternal medicine etc) and the second largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the country.
The Paediatric Surgical Service provides surgical services to the Central Region of New Zealand (population approximately 1 million). The majority of local paediatric services are delivered in the recently completed Te Wao Nui – Child Health Service and hospital onsite at Wellington Regional Hospital. Paediatric imaging for Wellington region patients currently takes place in the main Wellington Hospital Imaging Department and at Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua (approximately 30 min drive from the main campus). The team attends Hutt Hospital for ½ day weekly.
Our Paediatric Radiologists are an important part of the wider Diagnostic Radiologist team, and contribute to the general adult workload of the department including participating the diagnostic on-call after-hours roster (currently approximately 1:14). There is currently no separate paediatric after-hours on-call service, though the team does offer an informal “phone a friend” support to the adult radiologists. Ultimately, the goal will be to establish an after-hours paediatric radiology on-call service when resourcing allows.
We also have close working relationships with our other regional hospitals, including Hutt Valley and Wairarapa districts and provide tertiary paediatric radiology services to the Central Region.
Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
