About the role

We are seeking to appoint a Haematologist to provide comprehensive specialist care across both malignant and non-malignant haematology services, with a focus on allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Applicants with experience as a Stem Cell Transplant Physician or who have completed a recent Stem Cell Transplant Fellowship are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care while contributing to efficient and sustainable service delivery. As a Haematology Consultant, you will provide expert clinical leadership across outpatient clinics, inpatient services, and laboratory oversight. Your expertise in transplantation with help shape the transplant service both locally and nationally. You will work collaboratively across operational areas and within multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated, seamless care for patients.

This role offers a dynamic opportunity to work in close partnership with the Clinical Leader of Oncology and the Director of Medical Services.

Key responsibilities include:

• the clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients referred to the Wellington Blood and Cancer Haematology Service
• contributing to service development, quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance, and teaching.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Wellington Blood, Cancer and Palliative Care Service provides Clinical Haematology, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Oncology services across the districts of Wellington, Kenepuru, Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa, serving a combined population of approximately 600,000.

The Haematology Service delivers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care and manages a broad spectrum of haematological conditions, including acute leukemia, lymphoma, autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation, Car-T therapy (via clinical trial), plasma exchange, and disorders of haemostasis and thrombosis. Inpatient services are provided at Wellington Hospital, with outpatient clinics delivered across multiple sites to ensure accessible regional care.

Wellington Hospital is also a teritiary referral centre for allogeneic stem cell transplantation and has a catchment population of around 1.1 million. We work collaboratively with the other two allogeneic centres (Auckland City Hospital, Christchurch Hospital) in all aspects of transplantation, including forums for complex case discussions, national service provision, guidelines, and research.

The department maintains an active clinical research programme, including participation in clinical trials. It is an accredited FRACP training centre and is strongly committed to medical education, providing structured teaching and supervision for house officers, senior house officers, and registrars.

Multidisciplinary case meetings (Tumour Boards) are held both locally and regionally to support collaborative, high-quality patient care.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

About you

You will:

• be vocationally registered in Internal Medicine (Haematology) with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
• hold FRACP or equivalent to be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
• have expertise in clinical haematology and stem cell transplantation, diagnostics, and therapeutics in complex hospital settings
• have recent experience as an Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant Physician or Fellow
• be proficient in the management of malignant and non-malignant haematological diagnoses: medical expertise, communication, collaboration, advocacy, scholarship, professionalism
• be dedicated to coordinated multidisciplinary teamwork and improving patient care systems
• have a record of audit, teaching, and clinical research commitment
• have strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
• be proficient in IT and medical databases.
