About the role

The Neurology Service at Wellington hospital is looking for a Consultant Neurologist to cover sabbatical leave.

The role includes general neurology specialist outpatient care, alongside rotations supporting inpatient and on on-call Stroke care, including a regional telestroke service. We are looking for candidates with an excellent general neurology skill set, and confident to manage hyperacute stroke alongside inpatient care. We are open to tailoring a job plan to a candidate’s subspecialty expertise; with a neurophysiology service, botox and movement disorder service, and evolving specialty and MDT clinics.

You will be involved in teaching, continuing medical education and quality improvement. There is emphasis on ongoing development of the service to meet the needs of our population.

About the Team/Service/Location

We provide secondary and tertiary level neurology inpatient, outpatient and neurophysiology services to local and regional populations with close links to the regional Neurosurgery Unit based at Wellington Hospital.

The neurology service at Wellington regional hospital manages acute inpatient stroke services for our district, and provides a regional telestroke and thrombectomy service for surrounding regional hospitals covering approximately 1 million people.

You will be part of a dedicated and evolving multidisciplinary team of:

  • neurologists
  • registrars
  • neurophysiology technicians
  • clinical nurse specialists
  • nurse practitioners
  • allied health and administrative staff.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

About you:

  • Vocationally registered in Neurology with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRACP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
  • Relevant experience and training
