Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role
Fancy a change? We are looking for a Specialist Respiratory Physician (Consultant) to expand our current team of 10 physicians for a year to cover sabbatical and other leave. The successful applicant will join our existing friendly and supportive team, with a start date of between December 2023 and February 2024 (negotiable). The position is being advertised as full-time but we are happy to discuss options for flexible working.

The successful applicant will provide outpatient clinics in respiratory medicine and sleep / non-invasive ventilation. They will also join the existing respiratory on-call roster and provide ward cover 1 week in 8, looking after patients admitted under the specialist respiratory service and providing consult services to general medicine, intensive care and other services as required. Participation in endobronchial ultrasound and pleuroscopy is available for appropriately trained specialists with an interest in these areas. Job-plans include approximately 30% non-clinical time for continuing medical education, quality improvement and service development.
Mō tō mātou rōpū – About our team
The Wellington Respiratory department is based in the main hospital for the capital city of New Zealand and provides secondary care to approximately 450,000 people and tertiary services to a population of around 1 million. The department currently provides sub-specialist clinics in asthma, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, non-invasive ventilation, pleural disease, pulmonary hypertension, sleep medicine and transplant medicine as well as multi-disciplinary meetings covering interstitial lung disease, lung cancer and tuberculosis. Daily rapid-access clinics provide support for admission prevention and initial treatment of rapidly deteriorating conditions. We provide Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) for the lower North Island region.
Respiratory Medicine is based in the Clinical Measurement Unit at Wellington Regional Hospital. It provides outpatient services at Wellington and Kenepuru hospitals and in patient services at Wellington Regional Hospital. Outreach clinics are provided at Hutt and Masterton hospitals as well as community clinics.
Current specialist physician (consultant) medical staffing totals 8 FTE, split among 10 individuals, with a further 1 FTE currently being advertised as part of service expansion. There are also 4 full time registrars in respiratory medicine; two respiratory and one sleep registrar advanced trainee posts, one basic trainee post and a house physician.

- Vocationally registered in Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
- FRACP or equivalent qualification or to be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
- Independent in bronchoscopy, pleural ultrasound, thoracentesis and chest drain insertion
- Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
- Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
- Relevant experience and training
