Job description

Consultant Psychiatrist with an interest in Psychogeriatrics

• Invercargill Community Mental Health Team
• Southland Hospital
• Fulltime, Permanent or fixed term

Looking for a change in pace in life, the opportunity to leave the rat-race, but still use your exceptional clinical skills to provide a high level of care to patients? By joining the Community Health Team in Southland Hospital you’ll have the opportunity to work in a department that is willing to listen, a team that values and supports each other, whilst you provide adult psychiatry and psychogeriatric services to the Southern New Zealand communities. Preference will be given to doctors with an interest in Psychogeriatric Services.

You’ll play a key role in our multi-disciplinary Mental Health of the Older Person team, taking a leading role in maintaining and enhancing our continuously developing service. You’ll see a wide range of presentations and provide clinics at our main clinic in Invercargill and our rural clinics. Southern District Health Board embraces the use of technology, and you will need to be comfortable with technology and the use of videoconference in the clinical setting.

Now that you’ve reduced the everyday stresses of living in a larger city, you'll have the energy to make a positive difference with both patients and colleagues alike, being part of a service which works in an integrated model and a supportive group of colleagues. In addition to enjoying a varied workload and an exceptional quality of life, you can look forward to a culture where staff are included, valued and respected for their expertise.

Located in the lower South Island, the Southern district offers a wide range of recreational activities. It is home to two of New Zealand's national parks offering superb hiking and scenery, whilst internationally acclaimed fishing and a wide range of other outdoor pursuits are also available. Five top New Zealand snowboarding/skiing destinations are also within the region. You’ll have a variety of options for your leisure time, whether you have an interest in fishing, golf, a cycle ride, surfing, skiing or just putting your feet up with a good book you will find so many opportunities to do so in this beautiful part of the world. If you’re planning to bring your family, it’s a decision you’ll be proud you’ve made, Invercargill is an ideal place to raise a family, a modern city with a caring, safe community. The city also has superb facilities such as a sports stadium, cycling velodrome, excellent schools, a local tertiary provider where free fees exist and the University of Otago only a couple of hours away in Dunedin.

Applicants must have completed their specialist training and be eligible for vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand. The position offers an attractive remuneration package, relocation assistance and CME allowance.
