Job description

Older Person Mental Health Service is seeking Psychiatrists in Old Age Psychiatry from early 2018 to cover staff retirements. This vacancy may be suitable for applicants wanting full-time or part-time roles.

Older Person Mental Health Service provides mental health care and treatment to persons 65 years and older in the Canterbury District Health Board (population 500,000). It is part of the Older Persons Health and Rehabilitation Division of the CDHB and has a very close working relationship with Older Persons Health in- patient and community geriatric services as well as primary care medical and community services providing treatment and support to the elderly of Canterbury.

The service currently employs seven psychiatrists and provides a complete Old Age Mental Health service including: Inpatient care in two new wards at Burwood Hospital (opened June 2016) in close proximity to Geriatric Medicine ATR wards, a Mental Health Day Hospital, a large Mental Health Community team and an Old Age Consult Liaison Psychiatry team.

The successful applicant will be expected to work well with and provide clinical leadership within an Inter-Disciplinary team setting.

Applicants should hold a current (or be eligible for) Medical Council of New Zealand Practicing Certificate Vocational registration as a Psychiatrist, and hold a specialist qualification in Psychiatry recognized by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. The successful applicant should have a sub-specialty qualification in Psychiatry of Old Age or show extensive experience in this area of practice.
