Job description

Consultant Specialist Neurosurgeon
Based at Dunedin Public Hospital
Participating in the South Island Neurosurgery Service
• Fixed-term, 1 year
• Full time

The Southern District Health Board seeks to appoint a Consultant Specialist Neurosurgeon. Applications are invited from registered Medical Practitioners who hold the relevant qualifications and experience to join us. We are seeking a 1 year fixed term appointment, to commence as soon as possible.

The South Island Regional Neurosurgical Service was established in 2011 and functions as a single service, delivered from two sites, these being Christchurch and Dunedin and in supporting the growth and development of the South Island Regional Neurosurgical Service we have a vacancy for a fifth neurosurgeon.

This Consultant Specialist Neurosurgeon post will be based on the Dunedin Hospital site. Together with one hospital neurosurgeon appointment and one academic neurosurgeon appointments in Dunedin and five neurosurgeons in Christchurch you will form a regional service under the Governance of a separate Governance Board.

Neurosurgery services have a proud history in the provision of care in Dunedin and this is an exciting opportunity to be a member of this regional service in supportive hospital and community environments.

Dunedin Hospital is a 350-bed teaching and training institution. It is closely associated with the Dunedin School of Medicine, the University of Otago and is a Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Surgeons Integrated Training Program site. The Otago Medical School offers undergraduate training and all sub-specialities are represented in the Southern District Health Board. Dunedin offers a unique and attractive lifestyle with the benefits of working in a tertiary referral centre in a small neurosurgical unit that will operate as part of a larger regional service. The position includes provision of continuing medical education opportunities.

Dunedin is a wonderful little city with a big town feel and well-known for its Southern Hospitality. If you’re considering a move down South feel free to come and talk to us about the job, the good schools, the University of Otago, and the recreational potential which Dunedin and its surrounds possess.

You must be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, and have a higher qualification in the specialty of Neurosurgery. It is essential you have general neurosurgery training and skills and either have, or be willing to develop, subspecialty interests and subspecialty training that will enhance the delivery of neurosurgery in Christchurch and contribute to the development of the South Island Neurosurgical Service.
