Job description

Fixed term for 12 months
Job Number: WAI04795

We are seeking a consultant radiation oncologist to join our progressive and multidisciplinary department at Waikato Hospital for a 12 month fixed term contract starting as soon as possible. Our broad focus on patient care, research and education offers an excellent career opportunity.

We are looking for someone who is interested in an opportunity to experience work in a new location, as a wonderful stepping stone on their ideal career path.

Waikato DHB provides the full spectrum of Radiation Oncology services.

Our department runs on the Eclipse planning system and has four linear accelerators able to provide all aspects of modern radiation delivery including rotational IMRT and image guidance through cone beam CT. The department also has superficial kilovoltage equipment for the treatment of skin cancers.

We are the national leader in HDR brachytherapy treatment, with an active brachytherapy programme treating multiple different anatomic sites with an emphasis on cervical and prostate brachytherapy.

We routinely use stereotactic ablative radiation therapy for treatment of early lung cancer and lung metastases and also deliver linear accelerator based fractionated radiosurgery for the treatment of brain metastases.

The successful applicant would have the opportunity to be involved in the development of radiosurgical techniques to other body sites if they chose.

We are also the national provider of total skin electron therapy for skin lymphomas.

The range of radiotherapy techniques we utilise would provide the successful candidate experience that would place them in a position to practise anywhere in the future.

At Waikato Hospital you would join a team of seven medical oncologists, seven haematologists, eight radiation oncologists and seven palliative care physicians. As a Regional Cancer Centre we provide oncology services to a regional population of approximately 750,000 with radiation therapy treatment provided at Waikato Hospital and outpatient clinics in Hamilton and three secondary hospitals.

Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital and one of five campuses of the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The appointee has opportunities to become involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Many staff would call Hamilton New Zealand’s best kept secret, situated in the North Island of New Zealand along the banks of the mighty Waikato River. New Zealand is one of the top 10 safest countries in the world and living in the Waikato gives you the opportunity to have the perfect work-life balance. With a population of 150,000 Hamilton has surf, sand and snow a short drive away, outdoor adventure of all types, world class sport and entertainment facilities, affordable housing and excellent public and private schooling for all ages.
