Job description

Radiation oncology consultant

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Capital and Coast DHB (CCDHB) is located centrally in Wellington and has the equivalent of around 4,300 full time staff, making us a major employer in the Wellington region. We are also the leading provider of a number of specialist services, including neurosurgery, oncology, neonatal intensive care, and specialised mental health services, for the upper South and lower North Islands, a population of about 900,000 people. Our DHB has an annual budget of more than $1 billion, which we use to deliver health services directly and contract external providers to provide care, such as general practices, rest homes and pharmacists.

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital. It is a “foodies” paradise, cultural art-loving harbour city, and a place you quickly begin to call home. Wellington has been named the best place to live in the world 2 years in a row by Deutsche Bank’s 2017 and 2018 study of 47 cities globally ranked. According to Deutsche Bank, it is also officially the city with the world's highest quality of life and has the least pollution of any city ranked.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Capital and Coast DHB has a vacancy for a permanent and/or a locum full-time Radiation Oncologist to join a team of 8 Radiation Oncologists at the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre with a negotiated start date later this year or 2019. This centre is an integrated unit with Medical Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care services. The catchment population is approximately half a million, and one million for HDR and bone marrow transplant services, assessing over 1500 new patients per annum for radiation. Clinicians are site sub-specialised and supported by established MDMs.

Our Varian-equipped centre has 3 linacs (2 Truebeam and 1 dual-energy Clinac) in addition to SXR, wide-bore CT and Aria patient management and Eclipse treatment planning systems A full range of contemporary radiation treatments is provided, including VMAT, SRT (brain mets and lung) and IGRT external beam techniques. There is an active HDR service for gynae, prostate and skin cancers. We also have an active program of clinical practice developments with a current focus on extending VMAT and SBRT techniques.

This is a training centre, with 5 registrars to support the service. Wellington hospital is linked to the Otago University Wellington School of Medicine for training medical students and is a training centre for radiation therapists and Medical Physicists.

The hospital has dedicated research facilities and opportunities exist to collaborate with Otago and Victoria University and the Malaghan Institute.

DUTIES

We are looking for a colleague who enjoys working in a team and who has excellent communication skills. Our preference would be for a permanent clinician to have an interest in GI cancer, lung cancer, melanoma and breast cancer but a short-term locum with other interests might be accommodated. An interest in clinical research is desirable but not essential. You would have to be eligible to work in New Zealand as a Radiation Oncologist.
