Medical Director for the Mental Health Addiction and Intellectual Disability Directorate

Southern DHB invites applications for this exciting and challenging opportunity to mix your clinical expertise in a role that is part strategic and part clinical - as the Medical Director for Mental Health Addictions and Intellectual Disability Directorate. This is a whole of Mental Health and Addiction system, whole of district role in the southernmost part of New Zealand. The Medical Director component of your role will be 0.5 FTE (20 hours per week) and will champion and support the delivery of high quality Mental Health and Addiction services by providing clinical leadership and organisational support. There is some flexibility to the remaining 0.5 FTE (20 hours per week) clinical component of the role, we can welcome a clinician with experience in community and/or inpatient mental health, allowing you to hold a case load of patients in your area of specialty.

The successful applicant will contribute to the overall planning, coordination, and management of the Southern Health System – with a focus on safe, effective, efficient and equitable care that is a good experience for patients, families and health workers. In this senior leadership role, you’ll participate in the management of clinical resources and develop clinical services across the health system, provide support to foster the growth and development of the medical workforce and review the professional performance of the teams.
Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to relate to a wide range of people and promote the philosophy of the Southern Health System Vision and Values, and you will foster an environment where the people within our health system work in partnership to promote an optimum experience for patients, families and health workers. It is important you are confident and capable in providing professional advice to team members and working with the professional leaders to ensure a skilled and credentialed workforce.

It is essential that you will currently hold, or be able to gain vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council and a current practicing certificate. It is essential that you have at least ten years recent experience in a Psychiatry and be a proven leader with extensive knowledge of clinical quality and best practice and their applications within the Health Sector.
