Job description

• Southland Hospital
• Fixed term/Full time

Your Orthopaedic career deserves state of the art technology and lifestyle to match.

Southland Hospital is one of New Zealand’s most modern. You’ll find we have first class facilities and have first rate peer support from a very strong and collegial Orthopaedic and Surgical Directorate.

You’ll have a breadth of caseload you’ll find stimulating with a wide variety of trauma, but also the opportunity to undertake a sub-speciality interest. Our modern operating theatres, together with the latest in PACS digital radiology, MRI, CT and iSOFT patient management system, mean there's no better place to take a leading role in maintaining and enhancing our orthopaedic service.

Invercargill? It’s in the south of New Zealand’s South Island, surrounded by national parks. It’s not a big city and the pace of life and lack of big city pressures reflect it. We’ve an abundance of amenities, educational (primary through tertiary) facilities, arts scene and cultural life. We have space to burn, fresh air to share, and a sense of community many lament having lost. Up the road we’ve Queenstown and Central Otago – summer and winter playgrounds whatever your passion.

The duties are of a generalist practice encompassing both acute and elective practice but with scope to specialise and a sub-speciality interest in shoulder arthroplasty would be preferred. You will share the on call roster with the five other Surgeons.

The Orthopaedic Department is actively involved in teaching and is accredited for post-graduate specialist training as part of the NZOA training program and has two advanced training registrars each year. It is affiliated to the Dunedin School of Medicine and actively supports 4th and final year students within the department, with Senior Medical Staff providing Senior Lecturer roles to the School of Medicine.

The appointment will be full time fixed term for a year whilst we undertake a Service sizing, meaning there may be a possibility of a permanent role in the future.

Applicants must have completed their specialist training, be FRACS qualified and be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. The position offers an attractive remuneration package, relocation assistance and CME allowance.

Candidates who are not currently registered with the New Zealand Medical Council should be aware that from 1 November 2017 it will be the requirement of the NZ Medical Council that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible so as to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion.
