Job description

We are seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join our team at Whangarei Hospital. This is a new full-time post which will increase our complement to six full-time and two part-time Consultants.

NDHB provides public health services from north of Auckland to Cape Reinga. The population of Northland is about 164 000 and growing and one third of our patients identify as Maori. Whangarei Hospital is a medium-sized general hospital. Our new Maternity Unit opened in 2016. Each year there are about 2000 births in Northland, 20% of which are in Primary Maternity Units. Northland has one of the lowest caesarean section rates in New Zealand. We offer the full range of general Gynaecology services and have links with Auckland District Health Board for Gynaecological Oncology and Tertiary Fertility services. We teach 5th and 6th year Medical Students from Auckland University.

The successful applicant will be part of a 1 in 6 roster covering acute Obstetrics and Gynaecology, working alongside a team of five House Officers. Most of our House Officers do the O&G Diploma and some progress to the O&G Registrar Training Programme. The post will be based at Whangarei Hospital, with visiting Antenatal and Gynaecology clinics at Regional Hospitals around Northland. Most surgery is performed at Whangarei Hospital but there may also be day-surgery at other sites in Northland. The post will provide the successful applicant with lots of hands-on experience in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as opportunities to develop areas of special interest. We would welcome applicants with laparoscopic and/or pelvic floor surgical experience as we anticipate demand in these areas to increase in the future. However, we also want to hear from applicants wishing to develop new skills.

The successful applicant will be living in a beautiful part of New Zealand with warm summers, mild winters and lots of opportunities for outdoor activities on land and at sea. Whangarei is two hours’ drive from Auckland, with regular flights to and from Auckland Airport.
