Job description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Clinical Haematologist to join our team. The position will be 40 hours per week and will be based in Palmerston North with clinical responsibilities in one or more of the regions covered by the Regional Cancer Treatment Service.

Applicants should be Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia or equivalent and eligible for Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

MidCentral District Health Board provides clinical haematology, radiation oncology and medical oncology services to the District Health Boards that cover the communities of Manawatu, Tararua, Hawke’s Bay, Whanganui and Taranaki. This is a combined population of 500,000.
The medical team in the service has a wide range of specialist skills and expertise and includes:

Six other clinical haematologists
Six radiation oncologists
Six medical oncologists
One palliative medicine physician.

Multi-disciplinary case meetings (Tumour Boards) are held locally and regionally.

Outreach clinics are conducted throughout the central North Island. We have facilities for inpatient and outpatient haematology management and manage a wide range of haematological conditions including acute leukaemia, lymphoma, autologus stem cell transplantation, plasma exchange, haemostatsis and thrombosis. There is also an opportunity to undertake pathology work with MedLab Central, which is based at Palmerston North Hospital, as part this appointment.

The service is predominantly a clinical service, however the department does maintain an active clinical research portfolio including clinical trials. Possibilities exist for linkages with Massey University for pre-clinical research. The service is also an approved FRACP training centre and undertakes active post graduate teaching at House Officer, Senior House Officer and Registrar level.

Qualifications required

A specialist qualification in Clinical Haematology and eligible for Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
