ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an innovative and enthusiastic consultant psychiatrist who has a specialist interest and experience in adult acute psychiatry, to work in the Adult Acute Inpatient Unit (Te Whare O Matairangi).

The psychiatrist is responsible for ensuring that all clinical steps necessary are taken to assist patients to achieve optimal health, wellbeing and safety through the provision of appropriate assessment, intervention and education. As well as providing high quality diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients, they are responsible for supporting clinical development of this service.

ABOUT THE SERVICE

The busy Acute Mental Health Recovery Unit, Te Whare O Matairangi (TWOM) provides acute and intensive inpatient services for people experiencing severe mental distress, too unwell to be cared for at home and who require intensive care, treatment and support. The focus for treatment at the unit is on recovery and returning people to their home, usually within 2-3 weeks, with community support if required. We aim to provide the best possible clinical care in a respectful, supportive, safe and caring environment.

TWOM has a team of highly skilled psychiatrists, nurses and allied health staff providing assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults with serious mental illness and severe psychological disorders. They work in collaboration with the service user, their family/whanau and the community clinical teams to promote recovery.

DUTIES

- Provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults with serious mental illness and severe psychological disorders.
- Work in collaboration with the service user, their family/whanau and the community clinical teams to promote recovery.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

- Vocationally registered psychiatrist with Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) to practise as a consultant psychiatrist
- FRANZCP or equivalent and be able to register for specialist registration with the MCNZ
- Relevant training and experience
- Have a current driver’s license

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Capital and Coast DHB (CCDHB) is located centrally in Wellington and has the equivalent of around 4,300 full time staff, making us a major employer in the Wellington region. CCDHB operates two hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kapiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans three DHBs - Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast DHB’s and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3DHB sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Te Korowai Whariki services include regional forensic and rehabilitation services covering the Central region while the intellectual disability services extend the length and breadth of the country from six bases located in Whangarei, Auckland, Cambridge, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
