The Dunedin School of Medicine, in association with Southern District Health Board, seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a clinical academic to establish themselves in one of the leading medical schools in Australasia.

The appointee will provide leadership in teaching and research in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery while supporting an effective and efficient service for orthopaedic surgery patients in the Otago and Southland regions. There are opportunities for wide collaboration with researchers in the University’s well regarded medical and biomedical science departments.

In addition to holding the position of Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Otago, the appointee will concurrently hold a position as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Southern District Health Board. This is a joint University/Hospital position and will be held as single contract with the University. The two separate roles equal the equivalent of one full-time position.

Academic Component – 0.5 FTE

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Surgical Sciences, Dunedin School of Medicine and appointed to the position of Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor on academic achievement, skills and experience. The appointee will have academic qualifications and prior experience in teaching and research, and will be responsible for teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There will be significant opportunity for clinically-based research.

Clinical Component - 0.5 FTE

The Dunedin Hospital has 388 beds and provides care for a population of approximately 300,000 spread over a large area of the lower South Island of New Zealand. The successful applicant will participate in a shared roster and an after-hours on-call roster; clinical duties and patient care will form 50% of weekly duties. Alongside an enthusiastic group of colleagues, the appointee will provide support for the orthopaedic clinics. Additional payment is made for clinical duties outside of regular hours, in negotiation with the Southern District Health Board. The successful candidate must be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
