Job description

Critical Care Department
Full time
Job Number: WAI10168

Full time, permanent position as a Specialist Intensivist. The Clinical Director position is a fixed term appointment for 3 years.

The Clinical Director of the Critical Care Department of the Waikato District Health Board is the best job you have never heard of.

The Department is the largest department of its kind in New Zealand, covering all medical and surgical specialties, from the care of children to the second largest cardiac surgery practice by volume in New Zealand. We look after plastic surgery and burns patients, neurosurgical patients and just about everything else you can imagine. If there was a Noah’s Ark of Intensive Care, we would be it. We are at the centre of a regional referral network across the middle of the North Island, with all the related trauma and air retrieval activities that go along with that.

We now have over 4000 admissions a year to the various clinical units under the direction of the leadership group for the Department of Critical Care. The Department has a long and strong history as one of the earliest, and then largest, critical care departments in New Zealand, and therefore on the world stage given the prominence of intensive care training programmes and history in Australia and New Zealand. The unit is credentialed by the College of Critical Care Medicine at level C24. The role is supported by 17 registrars covering 24/7. The nursing team is well developed with 24/7 senior nurse cover.

As we look to the future we have a relatively blank canvas to consider the best way to organise the different clinical practices, weighing up the current generalist model against compartmentalisation and many other opportunities to strengthen and improve beyond our evolution as a busy one-size-fits-all service model. We have been challenged in the past by being short-handed at specialist level however this has been addressed and we are now increasingly able to train and appoint to specialist positions.

Although Hamilton flies under the radar as a city, it has much to offer, from proximity to beaches and world class surfing (30 minutes away in Raglan), to world class skiing and adventure sports in ubiquitous measure. You can work in one of Australasia’s biggest units and live in the country or alongside one of our world class attractions like the Waikato River, and best of all, spend very little time getting from one to the other.

In return for the opportunity to mould and shape the future of this fine unit, we are ideally looking for a mid-career intensivist with some life experience under the belt, and enough gas in the tank to take the department into its next form. We have some ideas but we would like a good person to join us, and to take us to the promised land, a person who is straightforward, packed with integrity, tenacious and resilient.

The opportunity to lead and form a large and prestigious department such as this does not come along very often, please don’t miss the opportunity this time round, you may not get another one anytime soon.

If you think you might be this person, and you would like to discuss the opportunity further, please contact the interim Clinical Director, Grant Howard (Grant.Howard@waikatodhb.health.nz Tel:+64 212 273 293), or alternatively just apply and we can discuss matters further with you as part of the appointment process.

Closing date: 07 July 2019
