Job description

Full time

Northland District Health Board advocates for affirmative action and actively seeks Māori into our workforce to reflect the community we serve.

We are seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join our team at Whangarei Hospital. This is a replacement full-time post. Our team consists of five full-time and two part-time Consultants.

Northland DHB provides public health services from north of Auckland to Cape Reinga. The population of Northland is about 179 000 and growing. One third of our patients identify as Maori. Most secondary services are based at Whangarei Hospital. We offer a full range of general Obstetrics and Gynaecology services with links with Auckland District Health Board for Gynaecological Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Tertiary Neonatal care and Tertiary Fertility. Each year there are about 2000 births in Northland, 20% of which are in Primary Maternity Units. Northland has one of the lowest caesarean section rates in New Zealand. We teach 5th and 6th year Medical Students from Auckland University.

The successful applicant will be part of a 1 in 6 roster covering acute Obstetrics and Gynaecology, working alongside a team of five House Officers. Most of our House Officers complete the O&G Diploma and some join the O&G Registrar Training Programme.

The post will be based at Whangarei Hospital, with visiting services at rural hospitals around Northland. The post will provide the successful applicant with lots of hands-on experience in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as opportunities to develop special interests. We would welcome applicants with experience in pelvic floor surgery, as we anticipate increasing demand in this area in the future.

The successful applicant will be living in a beautiful part of New Zealand with warm summers, mild winters and lots of opportunities for outdoor activities on land and at sea. Whangarei is two hours’ drive from Auckland, with regular flights to and from Auckland Airport.
