Job description

Are you a Radiation Oncologist looking for a new opportunity? Then MidCentral DHB, Palmerston North, may be the place for you!

You will be part of a team of six Radiation Oncologists.

The department requires the applicant to work as a general Radiation Oncologist although there is the potential to develop an area of subspecialty cancer interest.

Palmerston North Hospital is a 350 bed secondary hospital which services the MidCentral District Health Board region with a population of 168,000. It is a teaching hospital and is associated with both Auckland and Otago medical schools.

The Regional Cancer Treatment Service covers a wider area including Hawkes Bay, Whanganui and Taranaki with a total population of over 560,000. The Regional Service includes Medical Oncology Radiation Oncology and Haematology. Some travel is required in order to service the region.

The department has 4 Siemens multi-modality linear accelerators with MLC, EPI, cone beam and respiratory gating capability, CT simulator and superficial X-ray unit. The department currently uses a CMS Xio and Monaco planning system. There are well established and accredited IMRT and IGRT programs. Exciting linac and planning systems replacement will occur in the next three years.

The department is well supported with 3 registrars in training posts, specialist nursing staff, a palliative care team and a psycho-oncology service. There is a strong culture of multidisciplinary meetings and an active clinical trials portfolio. The department has “A” level accreditation (highest) with RANZCR as training centre for Radiation Oncology registrar training.

Qualifications required

Applicants must be eligible for registration and recognition as a Radiation Oncologist with the Medical Council of New Zealand, as well as having demonstrated clinical, management and teaching skills and the ability to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.
