Job description

Forensic Psychiatrist
Wakari Hospital, Dunedin,

• Additional Intellectual Disability opportunity
• Great lifestyle
• Flexible role
• Career development opportunities

The Role
Our Regional Forensic Mental Health Service (RFMHS) provides forensic mental health input across the Otago and Southland Districts, with a 13 bed medium secure inpatient ward in Dunedin, forensic community teams and regional prison and court liaison services. Depending on the area of work, typical duties may include inpatient or outpatient forensic care, court-ordered reports, prison clinics, providing regional liaison, and second opinions to colleagues. The role therefore brings the challenge of providing a high level of mental health care across both urban and rural centres and the flexibility to work, develop and lead within your preferred area of forensic care.

The current configuration of this role is 0.8 FTE forensic psychiatry and 0.2 FTE intellectual disability. The ID service is comprised of up to 12 medium secure inpatient and 4 step-down locked beds with regional and community liaison across a mixed general and forensic ID population. Flexibility exists across the forensic and ID service FTE to potentially reconfigure this role. Options may include continuing the current FTE split, discussing alternate FTE divisions or providing only general or forensic ID care within the 0.2 FTE.

Ideally this will be a permanent appointment but we will consider applications for a fixed term appointment.

About You
You will have a personal commitment to maintaining high standards of practice and an unequivocal dedication to working as part of a team. Your ability to provide clinical leadership and reliable medical input to the multi-disciplinary team will be pivotal to your success in this role. You’ll need to be committed to quality service delivery and development, and able to work effectively as a senior clinician within a multidisciplinary team.

It is an expectation that you will be on the service-wide general psychiatry on-call roster (supporting the on-call registrar) and participate in professional development activities such as CPD groups, journal clubs and grand rounds. With our strong links to the Otago Medical School you will be able to enjoy teaching medical students and registrars. Opportunities to be appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine also exist.

Fellowship with the RANZCP or the equivalent is essential and you must be eligible for vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand We offer an attractive annual salary package based on skills and experience ranging from approximately NZD 175,000 to NZD 260,000 (pro rata) as well as full CME entitlement, superannuation and annual leave.
