Job description

Respiratory Physician

• Southland or Dunedin Hospital, Invercargill/Dunedin
• Permanent, full time

This opportunity is unique, insofar as you get to choose which of our two Hospitals you would like to be based, our secondary hospital, in Invercargill where life is too easy, and you have the best access to Queenstown, Te Anau and the Catlins. You may instead choose the slightly larger city of Dunedin, predominantly a University town with its own unique vibe, it’s the second largest city in the South Island, surrounded by beautiful rugged beaches and dramatic hills and is known as the Edinburgh of the South.

About the Role
The department of Respiratory Medicine is actively involved in teaching and accredited for postgraduate training by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Affiliated with the Dunedin School of Medicine we actively support 4th and final year students within the department, with Physicians providing Honorary Senior Lecturer roles within the University of Otago.

We have four other respiratory physicians across the District. On either site, the respiratory service has certified Respiratory Physiologists providing a wide range of diagnostic tests including challenge testing. There are also Sleep Physiologist’s on both sites responsible for the diagnosis, fitting and ongoing care of patients in our community with CPAP and NIV units.

Southland - If you choose Southland Hospital, you will be the principal respiratory physician and work closely with the tertiary level services in Otago and Canterbury, which are within close geographical location.
You would provide full outpatient respiratory services to the Southland population and provide an inpatient consultation service. The position offers the opportunity to work closely within a dedicated team of at least six General Physicians each of whom has a subspecialty interest, and one Geriatrician.

Dunedin - Joining the team in Dunedin, you will provide a mixture of inpatient and outpatient services, providing interface with respiratory labs. Being based in Dunedin you will be required to travel to our Southland site, providing support to the team based in Invercargill.

About You
You will have a personal commitment to maintaining high standards of practice and an unequivocal dedication to working as part of a team. Your ability to provide clinical leadership and reliable medical input to the inter-disciplinary team is pivotal to the position. You will have a sound understanding and commitment to biculturalism and the organisational values, with a commitment to continuing professional development and providing training to students at all levels.
You will need to be, or be eligible for, registration as a respiratory physician by the New Zealand Medical Council, including having Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians or an equivalent and accepted international qualification, that enables specialist (locum tenens specialist registration) with the MCNZ, allowing you to be able to start in this role in the required timeframe.
About Southern DHB
Our DHB covers the largest geographical catchment of all the DHB’s in New Zealand. We proudly provide top quality healthcare to our population. Dunedin Hospital is the Tertiary Hospital for our district, and enjoys a close relationship with the University of Otago, School of Medicine. This gives our staff ready access to continuing professional development, involvement with medical student training, and all the stimulation and opportunities that come with an academic environment.

Closing Date: Sunday 23 February 2020

Candidates who are not currently registered with the New Zealand Medical Council should be aware that from 1 November 2017 it will be the requirement of the NZ Medical Council that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible so as to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion.
