Job description

THA00097
Where you’ll be working: Thames Hospital, New Zealand
The details: Permanent – Full time hours

Ko Moehau te Maunga!
Ko Tikapa te Moana!
Ko Hauraki te whenua!
Nau mai, haere mai ki te rohe o Hauraki! Nau mai, haere mai ki te Whare Hauora o te Kauaeranga!
Come and join us in Thames, gateway to the beautiful Coromandel peninsula!

About the service:
Thames Hospital is part of the Waikato District Health Board, and is set against the hills on the Coromandel Peninsula on New Zealand’s North Island. We are a fully modernised rural and secondary hospital service, providing healthcare for a catchment population of 45,000. This population swells significantly over the summer holidays as the wider country makes their way to their favourite vacation destinations across the Coromandel.

Our hospital provides a 15 bed consultant-led emergency department seeing 18,000 patients per year. There is 24 hour laboratory and radiology support on site, including CT. The inpatient unit has 48 beds split between general medicine, low acuity surgery and rehabilitation. We maintain a busy day surgery service and outpatient clinic with our own consultants providing treatment in addition to specialist consultants who visit daily and provide a range of specialist services. Virtual health continues to develop in Thames, with ward rounds, outpatients, and stroke thrombolysis all supported by telehealth.

We pride ourselves on the provision of quality and patient focussed care and work in a true inter-disciplinary way with nursing and allied health team members. The hospital has a feel of everyone pulling together to ensure the patients are cared for in the very best way possible across the care continuum.

About the role:
We have an opportunity for a motivated physician with a broad range of skills to join the medical service at Thames hospital. A team of four physicians provides general medical care to busy inpatient and outpatient departments. The physicians lead a team of RMOs, and a registrar from the rural medicine training scheme. There is a 1:4 on call roster.

Applications are invited from Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or Fellows of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine, or equivalent. You must be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. For more information about the registration process, please visit www.mcnz.org.nz. Why not do a simple self-assessment to see what options of registration are available to you?

For any queries about the role please contact Dr Gillian Twinem, Clinical Director Thames Hospital, on +64 027 222 9736 or email at gillian.twinem@waikatodhb.health.nz.

Why us:

The Waikato District Health Board (DHB) is one of the largest of 20 DHBs in New Zealand. We plan, fund and provide health and disability support services to a population of more than 400,000. We run five hospitals across the district – a tertiary hospital in Hamilton, a secondary hospital in Thames, and three rural hospitals in Te Kuiti, Taumarunui, and Tokoroa.

We are a values based and inclusive organisation that is committed to deliver the best health outcomes for our total population. To do this we are working hard to develop a robust and capable workforce that reflects the population we serve. We strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds with the necessary capability and who share our values to apply and would greatly value seeing more applicants from our Māori communities.

Why Thames:

The Thames-Coromandel region boasts some of the country’s most spectacular surf and swimming beaches and is a haven for mountain bikers, divers, fishers, hikers and outdoors enthusiasts. Thames is less than two hours’ drive to the major centres of Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua and their major airports.
