Job description

Rural Medicine Specialist
Lakes District Hospital, Queenstown
1 FTE, Fixed term

• Dream location
• Perfect Timing

Queenstown needs no introduction and now is the perfect time to make the move. Soak up the sun, spend some time on the lake and when the snow arrives hit the slopes.

We are looking for a 1 FTE Rural Medicine Specialist to join our enthusiastic team of rural generalists providing emergency and in-patient care to the Queenstown community for a one year fixed term role. Our team consists of 9 FTE SMOs and a Rural Hospital Medicine registrar. In this role you will work in our Emergency Department and on the ward. You will be confident working solo with your on-call backup as far as 30 minutes away.

The workload is especially varied, with the level of trauma you would expect from our young and adventurous population, balanced with in-patient care which is mostly general medicine, paediatrics and palliative care. Lakes SMOs also provide emergency back-up for the primary birthing unit and Community Mental Health Team and staff a weekly fracture clinic. Our team provides 24 hour cover through rostered shifts. We are a teaching centre for rural hospital and emergency medicine registrars and rural immersion undergraduate medical students and our SMOs are involved in Rural Hospital Medicine education and governance.

Lakes District Hospital consists of ten ward beds, five Maternity beds, an Emergency Department (which sees around 12000 patients a year) and a small out-patient department. The acute service is well supported by Southland and Dunedin Hospitals, St John and the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust. We have onsite Radiology, including a new CT Scanner and good access to 24 hour Laboratory services.

To be considered for this role you will be a Fellow of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine (FDRHMNZ), or close to completing this qualification. Ideally, you will also hold a postgraduate qualification in Point of Care Ultrasound. You will be comfortable working flexibly with our team of excellent nurses and keen to help us further develop our services as we grow. This role is a one year fixed term position.

Closing Date: Thursday, 30th July 2020
