Job description

Due to one of the clinical team moving to a leadership role within our organisation we are now recruiting for an Infectious Diseases Specialist for the team based at Tauranga Hospital with a focus on the delivery of high-quality specialist care to the rapidly growing population across the Bay of Plenty. This role will be based at Tauranga Hospital however will provide support with outpatient clinics and consult liaison service to patients at Whakatāne Hospital in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

We are looking to recruit an SMO who is keen to participate with us in developing responsive and innovative ways of meeting the needs of our growing population. The role is suited to someone who is enthusiastic around service improvement and working as part of a multidisciplinary team. The Bay of Plenty District Health Board is committed to our Te Toi Ahorangi vision of equitable services and health outcomes for Māori. To meet this vision the ideal candidate will have experience in working in a culturally diverse setting and proven skills in contributing to services which have evolved to meet the needs of patients, whanau/family and the wider community through an integrated service model of care.

The role is split 50:50 between Infectious Diseases and Acute General Medical responsibilities. This includes participation in the acute on call roster. The Infectious Diseases component involves consult liaison support for the wider organisation (secondary and primary care) on a shared roster (not out of hours cover at this time). It also includes antimicrobial stewardship alongside a dedicated pharmacist, Infection Prevention and Control as part of a multidisciplinary team, HIV care supported by two specialist nurses as well as preparation and management of the antimicrobial guidelines and app. There is a close working relationship with the microbiology team at Pathlab who provide laboratory services. This includes 2 clinical microbiologists and an advanced trainee in microbiology.

In addition, we seek an individual who is has the skills to foster a learning culture across undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff, with the support of the BOP clinical school and the University of Auckland. The infection team has a strong track record of research involvement, in recent years having been involved with clinical trials in Hepatitis C, RSV, Influenza, prosthetic joint infection and community acquired pneumonia.
